Afghanistan Sees Worst Anti-U.S. Protests Since Fall of Taliban, the New York Times, May 11, 2005:

Four Afghan protesters were killed and more than 60 were injured today in the eastern city of Jalalabad in the worst anti-American demonstrations Afghanistan has seen in the three years since the fall of the Taliban.
[…]
It was the second day of demonstrations by students in Jalalabad who were angered at a report in Newsweek magazine that United States interrogators at the Guantánamo Bay detention center had desecrated the Holy Koran by placing it on toilets, and even in one case, flushing a Koran down the toilet.

well lets hope this leads to an investigation of what’s going on at Guantanamo Bay. Prisoners who were released earlier this year and last year made claims that prostitues from neighboring countries were brought in to mentally break down the devout young captives bought over from afghanistan. MSNBC also had a story about a female interrogator using sexual innuendo to pressure captives.. i.e. pretending to have menstrual blood on her hands (which she claimed was really red ink from a marker) sick stuff.

Big trouble coming soon on Planet Bin Laden. Newsweek to blame? Yes. What did they think would happen when they published such a rumor?
The USA now has three days before a new Holy War is declared. World civilization as we knew it over over, killed by among other things, Newsweek’s insane reporting. And the fanaticism of our Muslim co-Earthlings…… Sad

Al Qaeda training manuals found in Afghanistan STATED that if one of their holy warriors was to ber taken into captivity, when they were released they were to lie about being abused, tortured and desecrated. It is a tactic that they knew would fuel hatred against the United States.
…and the guy at Newsweek takes detained terrorists and Tqaliban prisoners released from Gitmo at their word.

well, it’s not like people who are willing to commit acts of torture are going to cross the line and desecrate the holy book of the enemy.
there are rules, afterall.

I don’t know why the story is so utterly unbelievable, that people are saying that this source must have made it all up.
I would, however, understand Newsweek pulling the story and pretending they got it all wrong because of the pressure placed on them by the US govt – and deservedly so.
If we’re descrating their holy books, this is a huge problem. I don’t think that reporting it and risking the lives of soldiers even more is a good idea… but maybe if the govt didn’t use such disgusting techniques, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now anyhow. The blame does not lie on Newsweek alone.

Who can blame them for having protests? And why would Newsweek lie about this article, its not as if they are owned by Muslims…but now everyone is trying to cover it up and say its a LIE! In Iraq they torture prisoners and we have seen the photos…is that A LIE too?
The problem is nobody cares that its Muslims that are gettion tortured and Qurans that are going down toilets.
I ask everyone if Islam is a bad religion and Muslims are bad, then why is it the fastest growin religion and why are people falling in luv with it?

its the worlds fastest groeing religion because it is spreading across the economically and educationally devastated continent of africa.
a religion that promises glory and world domination(plus the whole ‘women are subservient to men’ angle) would understandably spread fast in a place populated by millions of people with nothing.
i just don’t remember any riots when islamic terrorists holed themselves up in the the church of nativity in Bethlehem in 2003 and used pages from the bible as toilet paper….
anyone?
anyone?
can we riot and kill now?
how about the next Miss World beauty pageant? i find those pageants offensive – can i run throught he streets and light buildings on fire and shoot into crowds?
i will await your defense of my actions. thanks for the support.

You cannot see the grey area in anything, can you Horns?
It’s should be completely acceptable for these people to protest over the desecration of their holy book – as the previous poster said – but obviously people don’t deserve to get trampled and shot over it. No one said that on here.
Why does it have to be an argument of “they did it, so why can’t we?”, when it should really be an argument of upholding the standards that we Americans want to believe that our country is run by – respecting people of all sorts and being humane.

It’s unfuckinbelievable that these overpaid armchair researchers in the fucking media can spread lies and cause deaths and are never accountable when they always cry for accountability. Fuck the Newsweek fucking CEO’s. I can’t believe these assholes believe anything in the US Press since they hate us so much?
String those worthless lazy so called press that thinks they are holier than though and the only research they do now is read shit and lies they get off the net and then they report it as fact…….the fuckin UPI and API line is all fucking lies………………give me a fucking break…….Wolf out………………

speaking of anonymous sources, horns…
QUESTION: Does it concern the President that the primary source for the intelligence on the mobile biological weapons labs was a guy that U.S. intelligence never even interviewed?
MCCLELLAN: Well, again, all these issues will be looked at as part of a broad review by the independent commission that the President appointed. But it’s important that we look at what we learn on the ground and compare that with what we believed prior to going into Iraq.
not like the actions taken on the advice of THAT anonymous source damaged our reputation in the arab world or anything…

Well, I could see retraction if the released detainee were someone like Curveball or Chalabi.

Maybe Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world because so many of the world’s people want to participate in destroying Imperialist Fascism. Muslims wouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings by descrating the Bible, because Fascist Christians use the Bible the way the Nazis used Nietzche, as a justification of their lies. Real Christians don’t murder and steal, last I heard.
And the overpaid Presstitutes at Newsweek, Time, New York Times, ABCNNBCBS, etc, are all scared of losing their cushy jobs and high salaries if they dare to try to do any real journalism. They forget the awesome power that they have. Why don’t they stand up to the Pentagon and say “Fuck you, Liars! We have proof of your wrongdoing, and we’re not going to let you get away with it!!” The time is coming, they will do it when they begin to realize how their credibility is completely disappearing. When no one buys their shitty bag of lies. No one watches the “Nightly News” anymore, and no one cares about the propaganda press any more either. Anyone who believes their crap is a stupid, brainwashed bumpkin or a rich moneygrubber who wants to keep raking in the defense contract money that used to be our tax dollars.
The people in Afghanistan didn’t die because of the Newsweek article, but because they were fired on by their own people. That’s fascism, folks. Just like our “allies” in Uzbekistan who just killed 1,000 of their own people. (Remember Uzbekistan? Where the CIA renders “enemy combatants” to be boiled alive?) Lots of other sources besides Newsweek have broken the story of what’s really going on in Gitmo (including the 3 British detainees who were released months ago–it’s only news to the people who don’t follow current events). I mean, who could disbelieve it after seeing the Abu Ghraib photos? This is intentional use of Muslim beliefs and fears to try to terrorize them into making confessions. But did these type of tactics work for the Spanish Inquisition? No, they only made the persecuted more resolved to fight them.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

hah HAH hah
wooooooosh.
wipe the spit you sprayed off your keyboard and congratulate yourself.
the spanish inquisiton? people boiled alive?
you are so deep in denial about the human rigths histories of islamic countries and so willing to dfend confirmed members of the Taliban that yo’re almost like a circus sideshow.
stop using your cell phone, you obviously have a brain tumor
