Eminem v. Mominem and all em Lawyers Mere weeks after auctioning off her old trailer house on Ebay, and listing it as "Eminems Home" to fully maximize profits, the rappers mother is suing her son, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. And we now finally know the origin of Eminems stage name: "M" (arshall) and "M" (athers), get it?Debbie Mathers-Briggs filed a $10 million lawsuit last Friday (Sept. 17) against her son, claiming that on his debut album, Slim Shady, Eminem portrayed his mother as an unstable drug user who regularly filed frivolous lawsuits. So -- the question that remains for the judge to decide: Is this a case of art imitating life or life imitating art? Referencing interviews the rapper has given to Rolling Stone, Rap Pages, and The Source, the suit states: "The accusations that Plaintiff committed a crime or crimes were and are false. Through the publication of such statements, inferences, or remarks, Plaintiff has sustained physical and psychological injury and damages." We at Soundproof, however, wonder whether or not "Plaintiffs" trailer-park neighbors whispering behind her back about possible drug use really qualifies as something to get worked up about. Finally, daring to offer some insightful commentary into the makeup of the American social fabric, Ms. Mathers-Briggs' attorney Fred Gibson tells the Detroit Free Press that the truth behind the tales Eminem tells on Slim Shady has been distorted. "Hip-hop is within the urban culture, and he's Caucasian, so he doesn't fit in," Gibson says. "So he has to project this image." In light of the above analysis, were keeping our ears to the ground on rumors of Gibsons possible next project: "The Troubled Face of American Race Relations: Ruminations on Class, Economics and Da Sikk Ghetto, by Fred Gibson, Esquire, of Sterling Heights, Michigan." >>> WallofSound >>> Detroit Free Presss coverage >>> Eminems website |
