We Thought the Pundits Said That Big Beat Was Dead!?

If there’s one thing that an electronic music magazine can rely on, it’s a big beat group providing some scrap of news when there isn’t anything interesting to write about. The news in question concerns the new Chemical Brothers video for their song "Out of Control." The Chemical Brother’s record label says, "The latest Wiz directed Chems viddy, "Out Of Control", has been deemed a bit too controversial for telly and so changes were made for broadcast." The BBC and Q Magazine both claim that the video was "controversial"… however no source (including the record label) mentioned who deemed the video too controversial… or if it was banned. Maybe it was because of New Order frontman Bernard Sumner’s vocals.

Coincidentally, every mention of this video controversy had a hot-link to the label web site, which features the director’s cut of the video in question. The web site features this telling comment by the video director, Wiz: "Advertising is the pornography of capitalism." The "controversy" follows the recent ban of the Leftfield video, "Afrikashox" and the Atari Teenage Riot video, "Revolution Action."

Is censorship so common that it’s being used as a marketing tool? Soundproof contacted the artist’s publicist, who had no clue about anything whatsoever, anywhere, anytime. Seems to us like the Chemical Brother’s marketing campaign might be out of control as well.
